Innovation and Sustainability in the Context of the
EU’s Circular Economy Action Plan (CEAP)

At comepack, we align with and support the European Green Deal through our sustainable philosophy, offering corresponding solutions. Through our resource-efficient circular economy system, we make a significant contribution to fostering sustainable supply chains and protecting the environment. Our objective is to contribute to creating a more climate-friendly future by championing innovative container management, resulting in emissions savings across the entire supply chain. This commitment not only aids our customers in safeguarding their products but also in reducing CO2 emissions.

What is the Euopean Green Deal?

The global consumption of resources is on the rise. To ensure that future generations can enjoy life on our blue planet as much as we do, a responsible balance between ecological, economic, and social goals must be achieved. Today, companies across Europe are defining their own climate neutrality goals and prioritizing the sustainability of their products and services. The European Green Deal, initiated by the EU Commission, is a political endeavor of the European Union aimed at making the EU the world’s first climate-neutral region by 2050, outlined in the “Green Deal Action Plan.”

As part of the European Green Deal, the European Union plans to decouple economic growth from associated increased emissions and resource consumption. The goal is to achieve EU-wide climate neutrality by 2050, promoting sustainable economic growth. The Green Deal encompasses various measures and objectives, including the reduction of CO2 emissions, the facilitation of renewable energy, improvements in energy efficiency, and the transition to circular systems for production and consumption. Key elements to achieve these goals include waste prevention (such as production waste reduction), reuse through a circular economy, recycling, research and innovation, and the marketing of secondary raw materials.

To reduce waste, particular attention is given to the introduction of circular economy systems. According to the new packaging regulations, all packaging on the EU market is expected to be reusable or recyclable by 2030, further contributing to the reduction of waste.

Sustainability Goals as the Key to the Future

The implementation of sustainable objectives often entails substantial investments and costs, whether for acquiring environmentally friendly technologies or transitioning processes in production and logistics. Sustainability goals require a long-term perspective to meet the requirements for climate neutrality and generational responsibility. However, alongside political goals, customer expectations and demands are rising, particularly regarding sustainability and climate neutrality. Customers now expect products and services to be sustainable.

In response to these challenges and in alignment with the Green Deal, many companies are decoupling their sustainability goals from purely economic objectives. Despite these aspirations, integrating sustainability into logistics and production processes can be a complex endeavor.

Considering the intricacies of supply chains, implementing sustainable solutions may initially seem challenging. The principles of a circular economy must be considered throughout all stages of a value chain, from conception and manufacturing to the end consumer.

Challenges and Solutions: Implementing a circular economy and sustainable container management in businesses

The implementation of a circular economy and container management in complex supply chains poses significant challenges for companies. Many are initially confronted with complex questions:

  1. What sustainability goals can be achieved through a circular economy?
  2. Which packaging should I choose for the reusable system?
  3. How many different types of containers do I need?
  4. What inner packagings are necessary?
  5. What factors should be considered for a successful transition concerning:
    a. Process parameters
    b. Automation capability
    c. Product safety
    d. Digitalization
  6. Who can support and advise me?
  7. Who manages the container cycle?
  8. How can I ensure the reuse of returnable transport packaging (RTP)?
  9. What needs to be done to prevent the loss of containers (shrinkage)?
  10. In financing/billing logic (deposit systems): What values need to be defined, and what procedures should be applied?
  11. Is a container management software required or not?
  12. Do I need tracking for my container management?

Sustainable Circular Economy with comepack: Reusable solutions demonstrate clear advantages over single-use packaging.

A circular economy represents an economic system in which resources, products, and materials are utilized with maximum efficiency. In a circular economy, products, materials, and resources are reused, repaired, and upgraded instead of being disposed of after a single use. This approach protects valuable resources and raw materials such as wood and water.

In the context of a container management system integrated by comepack, the reusable solutions (RTPs) offered by comepack are 49.91% more efficient compared to the ‘established’ single-use solutions. Concerning water consumption, the use of reusable transport packaging is 88% more efficient than single-use packaging, primarily due to the high water consumption in the production of cardboard.

Additionally, MTVs exhibit a 43% reduction in oil consumption within the ongoing container management. Furthermore, reusable solutions offer additional advantages such as enhanced transport security, automation feasibility, and the digitization of processes and products.

The fundamental principles of
comepack’s circular economy encompass

Prevent Waste

Efficient resource utilization and the reduction of single-use packaging to minimize the ecological footprint.

Instead of using disposable products, reuse emphasizes the continued use of products and packaging.

Instead of discarding products after the initial use, repair aims to extend the lifespan of products through necessary repairs.

The proper recycling of unusable containers to recover valuable secondary raw materials.

Our Approach – The comepack Circular Economy

For more than 30 years, comepack has been shaping sustainable reusable systems within an effective circular economy. In a sustainable reusable system, packaging is continuously reused through the implementation of efficient container management.

comepack assists you in selecting the right reusable transport packaging and develops individual packaging solutions based on your existing ones. Our solutions include consulting for selecting the right load carriers and calculating the appropriate pool size for your circular economy. Your requirements for process compatibility, automation capability, and product safety are taken into account to achieve maximum efficiency.

The container management software provided by comepack offers comprehensive digitalization possibilities, where load carriers simultaneously serve as information carriers.

During our Out-of-the-Box consultation, we analyze and identify your potentials collaboratively. We guide you through the subsequent transition to a circular economy within your company and supply chain. Throughout our ongoing collaboration, we stand by you as a reliable partner.

Simultaneously, the introduction of a circular economy allows processes within your value chain to be digitized. Through our digitalization solutions in the framework of our innovative container management, we control your circular economy system. Our goal is to ensure that the right load carrier is always available at the right time and place for the respective user.

A Circular Economy for Sustainable Reusable Packaging and RTP recycling

In the context of reutilization, all reusable packaging is inspected, refurbished, and cleaned with our sustainable container cleaning after each cycle. This allows container pools to be used for decades within an efficient circular economy.

If an MTV can no longer be used, we ensure proper recycling. This way, the RTP is transformed into valuable raw material granules and can be used, for example, to produce a new RTPs within the framework of the circular economy.
